Nagahara, a police officer stationed in a rural town in the Kansai region, disappears with a handgun and the police headquarters begin an investigation to try and find him. However, they are unable to locate any clues as to his whereabouts. Yoji, a classmate of Nagahara's from the police academy, decides to take a posting at the police box in order to try and uncover the truth about Nagahara's disappearance. While working there, a fire breaks out in the village and the body of Mori, the owner of the house, is found. The police initially consider the case to be a non-event and try to close the investigation, but a few weeks later Yoji hears gunshots and discovers the body of Kanai, the leader of a local gang, who has been shot dead with the same pistol that Nagahara had taken with him when he disappeared.
